Ask a Pol asks:

Have you seen the recent New York Times article about Chief Justice John Roberts and his influence on the Jan. 6 cases? The left is now saying he’s not the centrist they thought he was.

Key Cornyn:

[Supreme Court Justice from 1990 to 2009] “David Souter wasn't the guy that Republicans thought he would be either, so I don't find anything particularly remarkable about that,” Sen. John Cornyn exclusively told Ask a Pol

Caught our ear:

“I wouldn't be taking advice from members of Congress on how to do my job if I was him,” Cornyn told us.

TRANSCRIPT: Sen. John Cornyn

SCENE: Sen. Cornyn’s walking past the trams underneath the US Capitol when Ask a Pol’s Matt Laslo briefly catches up with him.

Matt Laslo: “Hey, did you catch that New York Times piece on Justice Roberts and the immunity case and some of other J6 cases?”

John Cornyn: “I think I saw the headline, that’s about all.”

ML: “Cause now, I guess, the left is saying he’s not the centrist that they painted him as…”

JC: “He’s got lifetime tenure.”

ML: “Yeah.”

Laslo chuckles.

JC: [SCOTUS Justice from 1990 to 2009] “David Souter wasn't the guy that Republicans thought he would be either, so I don't find anything particularly remarkable about that.”

ML: “Cause they would probably say that he's wading in too much on some of these cases. Like, you respect him?”

JC: “You know, I wouldn't be taking advice from members of Congress on how to do my job if I was him either.”

ML: “Fair, fair, fair. Have a good one, sir.”
