TRANSCRIPT: Sen. Elissa Slotkin (7-10-2025)

SCENE: Before Congress left town for its annual August recess, Ask a Pol founder Matt Laslo caught Sen. Elissa Slotkin in the Capitol’s basement before her and an aide entered a Senators Only elevator during a Senate vote.

Matt Laslo: “Happy birthday, right?”

Elissa Slotkin: “Yeah. ‘Preciate it.”

ML: “Do you think Elon Musk starting this third party is gonna mean anything?”

ES: “I don’t know yet.”

ML: “Yeah?”

ES: “Like, he certainly has the money.”

ML: “Right?”

Digitized tram bells ding.

Tram announcement: “The doors are closing.”

ML: “He’s got no base.”

ES: “So…”

ML: “Yeah.”

Tram: The doors are closing.

ES: “I enjoy a catfight between two powerful men, but until I see who joins him…”

The senator hops on the tram to her office across the street.

ML: “I know right? I’ll be watching.”

Laslo records the senator from outside the tram, even as he’s rushing to wrap the conversation up before the tram’s heavy and unforgiving robotic doors slam shut.

ES: “...I can’t say that this is a real thing.”

ML: “Yeah. Thank you ma’am.”
