Ask a Pol asks:

What do you make of Democrats telling me they’re gonna wipe the floor with House Republicans for supporting President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”?

Key Hudson:

“Yeah, they said that last time too,” National Republican Congressional Committee — NRCC — Chair Richard Hudson exclusively tells Ask a Pol.

“77 million Americans elected Donald Trump to enact this specific agenda: Border security, tax cuts, economic agenda, energy policy. This is the whole ballgame.”

Caught our ear:

“Even the Senate changes to the provider tax, I mean that’s a Ponzi scheme. I mean they found a loophole,” Hudson tells us. “They’re, basically, getting federal dollars that they shouldn’t be getting, and it’s all cost shifting. I mean, our healthcare system’s a mess in this country.”

TRANSCRIPT: Rep. Richard Hudson (7-2-2025)

SCENE: After Rep. Richard Hudson wraps up a conversation with a Wall Street Journal reporter, Ask a Pol’s Matt Laslo grabs the head of House Republicans’ campaign arm for a quick chat just off the floor of the US House of Representatives.

Matt Laslo: “Hey Mr. Hudson.”

Richard Hudson: “You again.”

ML: “Democrats tell me they’re gonna wipe the floor with you guys based on this bill — what do you…?”

RH: “Yeah, they said that last time too.”

Laslo and Hudson laugh.

ML: “Right? You’re not worried?”

RH: “77 million Americans elected Donald Trump to enact this specific agenda…”

ML: “Yeah?”

RH: “Border security, tax cuts, economic agenda, energy policy.”

ML: “Ahuh?”

RH: “This is the whole ballgame.”

ML: “But what about social programs? It was kind of a promise not to touch them…?”

RH: “I mean all we’re doing is waste, fraud and abuse. Even the Senate changes to the provider tax, I mean that’s a Ponzi scheme. I mean they found a loophole...”

ML: “Yeah?”

RH: “…and they’re, basically, you know, getting federal dollars that they shouldn’t be getting.”

ML: “Yeah?”

RH: “And it’s all cost shifting. I mean our healthcare system’s a mess in this country.”

ML: “Yeah?”

RH: “But a haircut on the loophole that hospitals are exploiting is not going to be a game-changer.”

ML: “Isn’t this like a backend way to like get at Obamacare finally?”

RH: “Not really. That’s why the conservatives don’t like it.”

ML: “Yeah?”

RH: “Because it really doesn’t… I think there’s — don’t quote me — but I think there’s a Ways and Means provision on the…”

ML: “Yeah?”

RH: “…some kind of increased subsidies for COVID. That’s the only thing that really touches Obamacare.”

ML: “There’s, like, so much in that bill. Is it hard for y’all to digest?”

RH: “Well it’s taking us time.”

ML: “Yeah?”

RH: “But I mean, we’ve had a lot of time on it.”

ML: “Yeah? Are you worried that like in 2010 when [Speaker Emerita Nancy] Pelosi made her party walk the plank on the climate bill that y’all might be walking the plank?”

RH: “The difference is the American people didn’t want the climate bill. I mean, it was unpopular. It wasn’t — this is the agenda that 77 million Americans voted for.”

ML: “Yeah?”

RH: “It’s a big difference.”

ML: “I’ll be watchin.”

RH: “Alright, man.”

ML: “Have a good Fourth if I don’t see ya.”

RH: “Okay.”

Hudson heads towards the floor of the House of Representatives.
